I love the rainy days, and thankfully one thing that Taipei has over Los Angeles (besides convinient, clean, and inexpensive public transportation) is rain. First come the big, tropical storm-driven rains of spring and summer followed by the small but dense gray day rains of fall and winter.

Rain makes for great mood, especially in black & white photography. And of the B&W films out there, I love Kodak Tri-X for it’s ability to convey that mood. Overexpose it a little, then over-develop slightly and you get a look that nothing else comes close to.

ah, i remember all these pictures.. they’re among my favorites from your gallery. i keep forgetting to ask… did you use anything to protect your camera from the rain? we’re not getting any typhoon down here, but i’d love to try shooting during rainy days too :)

    Thanks & not much LOL

I just be sure to keep the lens down while walking to keep any big drops off the front. When I lift to shoot I keep a hand over the lens, too. But remember I use a RF, which has compact lenses compared to SLRs.

When I get home I stick my camera in a room and crank up the AC to dry it out.

    Lovely shots Brian!

I keep wondering though… if you overexpose AND overprocess won’t you loose all the highlights? I tend to overprocess when I underexpose my films.

It’s slight (1/2 stop overexposure, 1/2 stop over-development) and it’s done to render a specific look on stormy days (i.e. artistic reasons) and not to preserve highlights or shadows.

Some of the highlights do blow out a little, but it love the look it renders with regard to wet pavement (the first 3 photos are good examples of that) and the “darker” mood.

I know. When I moved servers I was only able to grab the data but none of the files. I’ll work on finding some images to put back here.
