In the greater Taipei area, there are two kinds of night markets: those that have been “prettied up” for tourists (like HuaXi a.k.a. “Snake Alley”) and those that are more organic in nature and serve the community that surrounds them. Taiwan is not a country that celebrates Christmas. For them, the major point in the “Holiday Season” is Chinese New Year (This coming February 14th). However, mix a nearby International trade center, a nearby major hotel, a nearby major tourist attraction, and a high street shopping complex and you get an area of Taipei that decorates and publicly celebrates what is generally a ‘Western’ holiday.

In the Mandarin Chinese language, the words for “eight” and “Father” are almost-homophones. Logically, this would make August 8th (8/8) Father’s Day in China, Taiwan, Singapore, etc…
So happy Father’s Day to everyone out there in Sino-land.
