If I’m to be polite, I would describe Eyal Binehaker as a street photography purist. Others not so polite might replace the word ‘purist’ with something else, but the point is that he has a strict concept of what street photography is and he critiques other’s works based on that concept. Normally, a person with such a rigid view would be open to criticism of having such an absolutist view, but Eyal is difficult to criticize.
He is not the judgmental hypocrite that most absolutists are. He practices what he preaches in his own work, which is why I’m so happy to feature it here. His stuff rocks.
Like last week’s subject, both Ethan Chiang and I have something in common beyond a love for street photography. In this case, we have both experienced living on both edges of the Pacific. He currently makes his home in Seoul, the place of his birth, but has also lived out bits of his life in San Francisco and Taipei. I asked him to be a part of this series because I love the noir look that he achieves in his images and they way they tell a concise-but-complete story.
You’ll see what I mean.
I missed the last couple of weeks posting new street photographer interviews in the Photojazz Five series, so I’m making up by featuring a photographer with a truly excellent body of work. And there are six photos, not five. But it’s not cheating. Really. The last one isn’t street.
Carlos Henrique Reinesch is a hobbyist photographer from Brazil and has been indulging his hobby for only about 3 years. His favorite genres of photography are conceptual and street of which he finds street the most challenging.
This week’s featured street photographer hails from the home of the great Mount Olympus, the Olympic games first held at the foot of that mountain, the Olympians that live at the top of the mountain, and an economy that is bringing down the entire EU…umm…in a ‘Herculean manner’? Stamatis is a graphic designer from Athens, Greece whose favorite hobby is photographing his native home. And he does it very well. Just take a look.
Currently a photojournalism student at the Universidad Francisco, Santiago Billy (a.k.a. “Lokisb”) hones his journalistic skills by documenting the country of his birth, Guatemala. He is someone whose work is always solid and consistent, which is why I wanted to feature him here. He’s also the first street photographer to be featured from South America.
