This week brings you more street photos of Taipei, mostly from the Core Pacific City mall (a.k.a. Living Mall) because I took my kids there a couple of days in a row. By the way, Cars 2 is no where near as good as Cars but I did love the Japan set pieces.
On to the photos.
This week’s featured street photos from Taipei are a pleasant mix of feeding hungry ghosts, umbrella, tofu, and a health dose of militarism. It’s just another typical week in the big city.
This week in Taipei was filled with typical summer weather: hot, sunny, and humid with a downpour to break things up mid-afternoon. As such, most of this weeks street photos have rain in them. A lot of rain.
This past week saw my kids bi-annual visit to the dentist and so this week’s featured street photos from Taipei are all from the dentist’s office.
I grew up in a somewhat rural area near Los Angeles, California. As the area was relatively (relative to LA) undeveloped, certain wild plants such as milkweed were commonplace. California is also on the North American monarch butterfly migratory route. Add milkweed abundance to butterflies and I grew up surrounded with caterpillars. Caterpillars were my first-person cycle of life lesson.
Before the completion of the North-South Railway in 1909, Dasi was the connective trade point between Taipei and the south. It was made so by a combination of two major factors: it was located on a river used to transport goods north-south (the Dahan river, also known as the Takoham river in the native aboriginal language) and loads of investment capital. A civil war between Hakka clans forced refugees from the wealthiest of the clans, the Lin clan, into the Takoham river region. Realizing the importance of the location, the Lin clan invested heavily in it’s development and it was soon filled with traders and merchants. I’ll make this analogy: the Takoham river was the silk road of Taiwan, Taipei was Europe, southern Taiwan was Asia. Dasi was Persia.
